In October 2024 the Vega Strike Development team put out a survey; and
today we’d like to share the results for the 53 responses we received. While not a lot of responses, it will be used to help inform
the team. We’ll repeat similar surveys in the future.

The primary purpose of this survey was to help us target our CI system for what builds we focus on and what systems we make releases for.
Please keep in mind that the questions allowed people to make more than one selection; so the totals between different sections may add up to more than the answers received
and not match other sections.

Platform: Operating Systems

We have been building on a lot of platforms as we were (a) guessing where our community might be, (b) trying to target popular platforms, and (c) covering platforms the
current development team uses themselves. This survey provides us with the first bit of data to refine those based on your feedback.

Results:

From this we can see that the majority is currently running on Windows (47 users across the various versions), followed by Linux users across a few different distros (57 users
across Mint(9), Ubuntu(13), Fedora (3), Debian(13), FlatPak(5), Mageia(1), Slackware(2), Arch(9), Gentoo (1), PCLinuxOS (1)).

Now, at the time of the survey we had only released binaries for the Linux Platforms, and we do not have direct support for FlatPak yet (though we are aware that someone in the
community has at least tried to make a FlatPak build). So it would be natural to expect to see more Linux users at this time. The primary reason for this support was simply
that we were still working out kinks in the Windows and Mac builds and had not yet developed installers for them as of Vega Strike 0.8.0. Since then we have released
Vega Strike 0.9.0 with binaries for Windows and Mac; though our Mac builds are presently limited to the Intel platform.

Platform: Hardware

We also asked about Hardware Architectures:

NOTE: AMDx64 is almost certainly the Intel x86-64 architecture. Technically x86-64 is the AMD64 Architecture; however, most will know it as Intel. We’re reporting it here as AMDx64 to reflect how the community submitted it.

We do see some desire for ARM-based releases; though as expected the majority are all x86-64 users.

We are aware that Apple is moving away from Intel and newer Macs are only on their M-series ARM processors.
We have attempted to support the M-series in our pipeline - GitHub does support it; however, it has been
problematic for us to support as there have been some build issues and we do not have anyone on the team
to fully diagnose those right now.

So if you would like to see us support the M-series then it would be greatly helpful if you could join
our Gitter.im channel. We could really use some folks that can build the project locally, even if we needed
to help out with getting things setup. Or even if you wanted to provide access to teams members in some form.

Alternatively, we do have the ability to collect donations through OpenCollective.
Our funds there are presently very limited, and our goal is to be able to pay back those in the community that
are already providing resources (DNS, Servers) and cover any storage costs we may need to for our CI system
(presently supported via the Open Source plan with Docker Hub). However, if there were sufficient funds we
could also provide support using services like https://www.macincloud.com/ to developers for access to the Mac
Platform to help iron out those issues and deliver better Mac support.

General Feedback

Finally, our survey included some basic feedback via free form text.

While most of the feedback was thanking us there were a few items called out:

Some issues with mission files not working in 0.8.x so the game was crashing

Request for VS to become an MMO

Request to be able to walk around the planets

Request for an in-game 3D map of the VS universe, referencing the old VSMap3D project

Request for better documentation/tutorials

Request for FlatPack/AppImage releases

Request for Windows releases

Request for generative AI usage

Request for updating the pipeline to use something like Blender, support mods, etc.

Steam Publication

First, we welcome all feedback and we have multiple ways for users to submit feedback to us. The best way to provide feedback is to
get on GitHub and direclty file issues with us VS Engine Bug,
VS:Upon The Coldest Sea Bug, or engage with us in conversation on Gitter.im.
Alternatively we do have some email addresses:

Development

Security

And of course there is the VS Forums.

While the team is most active on Gitter.im and GitHub, we do also pay attention to the other methods as well.

MMO Support

The original developers had built in some multi-player support similar to that of Wing Commander Armada and other games from the 1990’s where one could direct-connect
with another user to play. However, we received feedback from those involved with the original dev team that it was not working and as our new dev team was just getting
familiar with the code we made the decision to remove that support for the time being. We also had to initially drop support for Windows and Mac due to what our dev
team could manage.

Our first target was to get the game functional again, which we were able to do with the 0.7.0 and 0.8.0 releases. After that we wanted to re-introduce support
for Windows and Mac, which was accomplished with the 0.9.0 release; though due to changes on the Mac platform we may have to drop support there temporarily again due
to issues on the M-series processors. For 0.10.0 we are working on settings and other functionality and the team has developed enough expertise to begin making some
more radical refactors as we work our way towards the 1.0 mark where we have a solid game that we can build from. There is still much to do.

Now regarding multi-player support in any form, the current idea is to target that work for the 2.0 releases. And the best way to speed that up would be to
join us on the development team or sponsor developers so we could have developers with more dedicated time to Vega Strike - at present all our devs are 100% volunteer
and also have to be able to support themselves and their families via other jobs.

Walk the Planet

From some conversations with members involved with the old dev team we are aware there were some thoughts around doing this kind of thing. However, we do not ourselves
know yet how to extend the game for this. So presently we will need to keep this in the backlog for a future addition so we can focus on getting to that 1.0 release mark.

In-Game 3D Map of the VS Universe

We are not sure where this presently falls. Certainly an in-game map would be a new feature and we do not yet have bandwidth to take on a new feature. However, we might
be able to help resurrect the VSMap3D tool and bring it back for usage. And we would love to know what other tools there were too. Most of us were not part of the original
dev team and do not know all the tools that were made or utilized. We’ve been learning; but if there’s something you think could help us then please reach out and let us
know.

So as-far-as In-Game this would need to be on our backlog of features.

Documentation

We agree that we could always have better documentation. We want to make the game as easily access to be our users as we can. We know not everyone is a developer and
we expect that a wide range of people with a wide range of skills are going to want to use VS. Our resources are limited, however; that said one way non-developers
can help out is by getting involved to contribute documentation, updating tutorials, etc. We know there’s a lot of information in the old VS Wiki, and it’s getting
out of date as we move forward. We’d love to have help there.

FlatPak, Snap, AppImage Releases

We are aware that there is a desire to make these universal packages. However, they are not without their issues.

We did have a community member reach out about building a FlatPak; and are not sure where it ended up. Though at the time we were seeing issues with how the FlatPak
Platform interacts with our build environments which made it hard to move forward. We certainly welcome such efforts to add to the community, and indeed this is
how our Arch Linux users are supported as we had someone step up and make an Arch Package (AUR) for VS.

Windows Releases

We are glad to report that with the release of 0.9.0 we have full Windows support including an Installer. We also have a Mac DMG release too for Mac Intel systems.

Generative AI usage

We have discussed this on occasion on gitter; however we presently have so much to do that it is not a high priority for us right now. We think there can be
some very interesting things to do with enabling AI tooling to take over operating the various NPC ships, do communication, etc. So tick this one for a future enhancement.

Updating the pipeline

The team has been very focused on building up the system that we already have. As we have done this we have updated some things; however, we know we still have a long
ways to go. And whatever we do we may need to provide the ability to migrate the old data in the game assets.

We have had discussions around various aspects of this - everything from should we keep the VS Engine or work towards running the assets on another game engine to
how do we update the rendering pipeline to use Vulkan vs OpenGL. Discussions are still on-going; and we’re still learning a lot especially in this area. Most of our
existing effort has been around the code structure and usability; but we are going to have to start thiinking about the data pipelines - Vulkan, etc.

The best way to help out with this would be to join us on Gitter and GitHub to help make these kinds of transitions.

Final Thoughts

It has been about 5 years since the new dev team has come together to pick up the mantle of VS and ressurect it. We’ve had a lot of challenges in that time but have
also come a long ways, and are now addressing major bugs in the system that have been there for a long time - even discovering some new ones.

Our goal is to make VS the best we can make it and we hope that as we do our community will also come up along side us, grow the team, and continue building it for
the future generations to enjoy. There is much work to be done and we look forward to getting to know you all through this endeavor.

What’s changed?

Since our last release in March 2022 of Vega Strike 0.8.0 we’ve continued to refactor the code and make general improvements.

While we have continued to refactor, make improvements, fix bugs, and update dependencies much of the 0.9.0 release was
focused around restoring support for Mac and Windows. It is therefore with great pleasure that the Vega Strike Development
Team is pleased to announce that we have been able to not only restore providing builds for all three of our major platforms
(Linux, Mac, and Windows) but we have also been able to provide installers for Mac and Windows. A great thanks goes out
to Stephen G. Tuggy and others that have contributed and tested on these platforms to help make this great achievement
possible.

As noted with the 0.8.0 release we have completely dropped support for Python2 and are 100% Python3 oriented. We have also
dropped providing builds with the LEGACY OpenGL support; however, support remains in the source code should anyone still
need it.

As part of updating the Vega Strike Engine we have started a journey to update how we store and load data. With the 0.9.0
release we have moved our a number of our data assets from defaulting to using a CSV format to now using a JSON format.
While the format is not as nice to use in tools like LibreOffice Calc or Microsoft Excel, this will help reduce errors and
make it easier to maintain the files.

Finally, our Vega Strike Engine API has been updated to Engine API 2 which moves some functionality to the Game Assets in
addition to the CSV to JSON file format changes.

As a reminder, the Vega Strike Engine application is available as
vegastrike-engine
which requires the
-D
parameter to specify
where to find the Game Assets. The
vegastrike
binary is still being provided at this time and it will continue to autofind
the assets like with previous versions. However, we strongly advise moving to the new
vegastrike-engine
binary and specifying
the parameter for the Game Assets as we will be dropping the old binary name (vegastrike) in a future release.

For a complete list of differences see Vega Strike Engine Delta and Vega Strike: Upon the Coldest Sea Delta.

Want to help out?

There’s a lot to do. We’re working diligently to update Vega Strike. Version 0.10.0 is our next step along the line which will be
continuing to bring big improvements to the engine. We’ve already got several releases planned in the process of continuing to update
our dependencies and fix bugs; you can see our Road Map. We need everything from coding, story development, art work,
documentation, and even just generally helping the community.

What’s changed?

Since our last release in April 2021 of Vega Strike 0.7.0 we’ve continued to refactor the code and make general improvements.

We have also made the Python3 Support the official build. We are no longer providing Python2 builds; if you need Python2 it is still
available but you must make your own build from source. Python2 support will be completely removed in our next release (0.9.0).

Some changes to OpenGL have also required that we provide two separate builds on Linux Platforms. Unfortunately this requires making
separate builds due to linking against libraries that we can’t do otherwise. Our old methods of using OpenGL are available using the
“LEGACY” builds; while the newer support is provided using the “GLVND” builds.

The Vega Strike Engine now supports a Versioning API that provides the release version (e.g 0.8.0) and the Engine API Version (e.g 1).
The Engine API version works much like the Android API Version - it’s a simple incrementing unsigned integer value. If the API does
not exist (import error in Python) then the Engine API Version is zero (0) and the release version is at most 0.7.0, but can also
be any earlier version. We highly recommend that game assets developers gate on this API as going forward we are going to start
introducing changes where games will need to rely on the Engine API Version value to determine that they are compatible with the
engine. Aside from the introduction of this API there is no difference in the Python API provided from 0.7.0.

The Vega Strike Developers are also putting in place a standard binary naming convention of
vegastrike-<tool>
or
libvegastrike-<library>
.
This is to help associate all our tools and libraries. Binaries using the new naming convention will also not be specific to any given
game asset and will require the appropriate parameter to specify where to find the game assets when applicable.

With 0.8.x we have restored the ability to build on the Mac and Windows platforms. However we’re not quite ready to provide pre-built
binaries. Please watch our next release for pre-built binaries. In the meantime we invite you to download the source and build! If you
still need a pre-built binary and don’t mind an old version then please visit our old SourceForge site to find the 0.5.x releases.

NOTE: Under Windows the Vega Strike Settings utility is currently broken due to a dependency being flagged by Windows improperly and
therefore preventing the utility from being able to run. Fixing this will be a priority for releasing 0.9.x.

For a complete list of differences see Vega Strike Engine Delta and Vega Strike: Upon the Coldest Sea Delta.

We have been monitoring the situation with the FreeNode, and after seeing some of the
antics that FreeNode has pulled this last week or so and with a general consensus for
the few of us ever present in the IRC we have moved our primary IRC channel over to
Libera.chat.

What about the FreeNode Channel?

We haven’t been directly impacted yet, but several of on IRC are no longer comfortable
with a wait and see approach as we have been taking while watching things unfold with
other major open source projects that are more present on IRC than we have been.

That said, we have historically run with two IRC provides - a primary and a backup.
However, our backup provider (irc.stealth.net) seems to no longer be around so at least
for the foreseeable future we will maintain our FreeNode IRC channel as backup to our
new home on Libera.chat.

How to get on libera.chat?

Libera.chat provides some excellent help on their website for registering a Nickname,
and also for connecting using various clients. Please use their Guides to
get started.

Why libera.chat?

After a number of events at FreeNode quite a few of the staff and operators left FreeNode.
A great many of them joined together and created libera.chat with a goal of serving
the open source community.

Where on libera.chat?

We have registered the #vegastrike and #vegastrike-* channels for our use with Libera.chat.

We will use #vegastrike for general communications and are looking to enable our community
to use the #vegastrike-* channels for focused discussions, e.g #vegastrike-pwcu. If you’re
interested in these community channels then please reach out.

Why keep around IRC when there’s more modern chats system available?

We have quite a diverse community coming from all stretches of life. Some folks still prefer
the Forums, while others prefer IRC or Gitter.im. We want to enable
our community to use the communications methods that they are most comfortable with so long

What’s changed?

Since our last release last October of Vega Strike 0.6.0 we’ve done some refactors of the code as the new team has begun to understand
the code better. We’ve also added some helper scripts and a launcher icon for the Vega Strike Settings utility.

We have also disabled the networking code for the time being while we focus on the core engine. We intend to bring this back at a later
release after we’ve understood the core, single-player game better.

Like with 0.6.0, only Linux releases are available at this time. The Windows and Mac release of 0.5.1 are still available on Source Forge.
We do hope to bring back those releases, and having more team members on those platforms would help greatly in our ability to do so.

Want to help out?

There’s a lot to do. We’re working diligently to update Vega Strike. Version 0.7.0 is our next step along the lines and is preparing us for moving
off of Python 2 and onto Python 3. We’ve already got several releases planned in the process of continuing to update our dependencies and fix bugs;
you can see our Road Map. We need everything from coding, story development, art work, documentation, and even just generally helping the community.

The development team is active at Gitter.im and we’d love to hear from you.

What’s changed?

Since our last release in 2012 of Vega Strike 0.5.1 we’ve made a few minor changes for 0.6.0. With a mostly new development team leading
the way we’ve updated the dependencies to work on the newer systems, and fixed a few necessary bugs in the process. Development has also
moved from our old home at Source Forge to our new home at Git Hub.

Want to help out?

This page will allow us, and the members of the community, to financially back the project, thus allowing to it to move forward with more ease.
Your support will pay for infrastructure (such as this website) and for benefits to our community (such as events and meet-ups).
Making monthly or one-time donations will land you a spot permanently in the Backer/Sponsors on our website and on our GitHub page.

But this is not the only way you might be able to contribute to our project. We are nearing our next serious release - version 0.6.0, and we’ll need a lot of help from the community. Currently we need help in the following areas:

Testers to test the game on as many platforms at possible.

Content creators to further improve and enrich our game (music, art, 3D models).

Story tellers to think of and create missions in the game.

Technical writers to improve and enrich our documentation.

Packagers to ease the redistribution of the game across different platforms and redistributions.

And, last but not least, we need developers to help fix bugs and create new features in the game.

If you’re willing to contribute, but you haven’t found something on the list that talks to you or fits your skills, don’t worry!
There are many more tasks to do in the community, so if you have any questions or suggestions,
feel free to get in touch with us on our Gitter channel, Forums or open a new issue on Github.
